The quick verdict
The Chrysler 26 is a cheap, heavy, solidly built trailer-sailer with unusually roomy accommodations and nearly standing headroom. It is tender at first, slow in light air and not an offshore boat. Most sell for a few thousand dollars, so have a surveyor check the keel board, pin and winch, the rudder and tube, the mast step and the cabin sole.
Nearly 6 ft standing headroom and big interior for 26 ft; Heavy, solidly built hull; forgiving in rough water; Sleeps up to six, with an enclosed head; Trailerable swing-keel version with 2.25 ft draft; Low purchase price for its size
Initially tender; reef early; Slow in light air; Not a racer; Not suited to offshore sailing; Ballast not low in the swing-keel version; Swing keel needs care when raised or lowered; Swing-keel board, pin, winch and cable wear or failure; inspect yearly; Rudder plate cheeks and rudder-tube bearing prone to cracking; Soft spot in cabin sole at foot of the companionway steps; Cracks at mast step can mean damage to the mast post
